As a champion of small businesses we’re really excited about Small Business Saturday tomorrow. It’s a great reminder and opportunity to head down to the nearest high street and see what your local independent shops have to offer.
American Express launched Small Business Saturday in the US the weekend after Thanksgiving 2010, as a counter to Black Friday and Cyber Monday which tend to be dominated by larger companies. It came to the UK for the first time in 2013.
Whatever your thoughts on its origins, there’s no doubt that Small Business Saturday is a great initiative to encourage people to support local retailers before Christmas. It also comes with the added bonus of helping you find unique gifts for family and friends instead of the same old M&S pyjamas, Amazon books or box of chocolates from Tesco.
